Georgia - Treasure Chest - Revealing Images for Speaking Activity

Uploaded by Sanderin van Hazebrouck, Pädagogische Hochschule Heidelberg (Germany)

To check what the learners have learned during the lesson, the teacher has designed a flipchart with a treasure chest. In this excerpt you can see the intermediate learners pulling out single images, all connected to what they have previously learned about Georgia. The images are intended as triggers for a spontaneous oral revision.

This has a great effect on the kids; they can come in front and pull something out of the box, like a picture or something. The surprise effect is great since they don't know what's coming. So it's very motivating. They spoke freely and you could really see what they learned and what they remembered. It was nice to see that they could say a lot about each picture. You can also ask the weaker learners to come to the IWB. For example, one learner did not know a lot, so the whole class helped her out.

I also liked the exercise with the box where you had to pull out objects and then describe them. I thought it was funny and I learned a lot about the signs of Georgia and why the Coke bottle is connected to Georgia as well.

This is the aspect of differentiation. You have to consider the different skills and abilities of each learner and the IWB can help you to do that. The learners can also just say the name of the object and ask another learner to go on.
