Describing people: using annotation tool to identify character

This video clip took place in the context of a lesson whereby learners were practicing sentences to describe people. In the clip the teacher created an electronic version of the board game 'Guess Who?' The game required learners to deduce a character's identity by asking the opponent questions about the physical appearance of the character, for example, 'is he wearing a hat?' The whole class were required to ask the teacher questions about her chosen character and eliminate any characters that did not match the answer given by crossing out the characters on the IWB.  The teacher provided worksheets with example questions to support the learners.

I took something which was real for the children that they maybe play at home so it was relevant. 

I think it takes the pressure off it being everybody sat at the table. Everyone sat on the carpet; it allows them to explore a bit more and to be a bit more expressive.  They were able to use their skills which they are confident with and apply it to the IWB and cross out the images one at a time. 

Because their concentration is on something that’s interesting and something that’s fun for them, it takes away the pressures of learning the language and learning the new skills.

When asked what they enjoyed about using the IWB during the lesson, the learners responded: ''When we go up to the board and cross things out.''
