Likes and Dislikes: using hide and reveal to conceal text and images

Description

This activity took place in the context of a grammar lesson requiring learners to say and understand what they like and dislike using the third person.  This particular clip is an extract from the final part of the lesson for learners to revise what they learnt. The class was split into two teams and individual learners from each team had to drag the red squares to either reveal a sentence in Welsh or an image. Behind the squares the teacher had randomly locked in place various sentences and corresponding images that the learners had to match.  If the learners uncovered the text with the wrong image, or vice versa, the squares were placed back where they came from and the other team were given a chance to play.  The learners had to read and understand the sentence in order to work out what picture to look for.

Teacher comment

This clip was a plenary of the lesson so building upon the sentence structures and sentence patterns they had learnt that lesson. It was done in an engaging way which the children really enjoyed. It enthused them about learning a new language and again it’s an activity where the children can come up to the whiteboard themselves, rather than just having to sit and listen to me for the end of the lesson.

It enables participation and engages them into the activity. Using celebrities, modern popular culture makes them interested in what they are doing [and want] to use their reading skills to read the sentence patterns that are there. These patterns were from what we had done in the lesson, but different phrases like ‘loves something’, ‘enjoys something’ or ‘plays with something’ were also introduced as well. It was part of summing a few lessons up in one activity at the end.

In this extract the learners were able to come to the whiteboard using the sliding objects [drag and drop] across the screen to be able to reveal or hide pieces of information and the learners were able to do that themselves. Again it was the children using it which is what I try to encourage with the IWB.

Learner comments

Our teacher is good at creating fun games and preparing lessons beforehand so he doesn’t write everything on the IWB during the lesson.

I enjoyed the matching game with Barak Obama. I just like how you can have a go at actually doing it yourself.

I like how you can move the squares because on a normal computer the mouse shakes and it’s really hard to move so I’d rather it on the whiteboard.
